It’s small, lightweight, and runs on 8 AA batteries. Thanks to our friends at Makais.com we were able to get our hands on one to review it.

When we first received this item, we were definitely skeptical to whether it could perform as well as a real full size version. The table measured a mere 22″ x 12″ x 4.25″ so it was definitely small enough to fit on most tables or be thrown into the trunk of your car.

After opening the box, we discovered that the table included two pushers, two pucks, as well as parts and screws to build the goals. You definitely need a Philips head screwdriver to complete the table and we were slightly disappointed that it didn’t come with the 8 AA batteries needed to start playing right away.

Assembling the goals was pretty straight forward — there were 8 screws in total (4 long and 4 short). The manual score keepers had to have the blue slider slid on to create the scoring system. Then the entire system snapped into the black goal pieces. The longer screws attached the goal to the top of the table while the shorter screws secured the goals to the sides of the table. In total, it took about 10 minutes to lay out all the parts and fully assemble the table.

Since we didn’t have batteries included with the table, we had to start hunting for batteries. This proved to be the most time consuming part. We didn’t have eight AAs laying around, we had to make a quick trip to our local Target to pick up some. 20 minutes and some $10 poorer we were ready to go.

The batteries had to be popped into the bottom of the unit. When we flipped over the table we realized that we still needed our phillips head screwdriver to complete the deed. The battery housing had screws are extremely short and easy to pull off but was a concern for us as well. We can definitely imagine a time when you bring the unit on the road and run out of power only to realize you don’t have a screwdriver to change out the batteries. Even if you did have a screwdriver, the screws were so short that one drop into the dirt of a campsite might be disastrous. We think that a bit of duct tape could hold the battery housing closed if this were to ever happen.

Next to the battery, you can see the small fan that powers the entire table. It’s similar in size to fans found in desktop computer cases so we were immediately concerned that the game play would suck. After the batteries were popped in and the power switch flipped on, the whirl of the fan started up signaling “game on”.

The most important part of the review is how the table plays so here we go. The pushers are pretty tiny but for kids we think it would be a good size. The pucks are made of plastic and resemble poker chips (the thin lightweight kind, not high quality casino ones).

The thin nature of the pucks interacted okay with the limited airflow of the table. The pucks didn’t really hover if you left them alone but if you hit the puck it did glide smoothly as expected. We were surprised that we were able to do both angle shots and hard hits without the puck jumping off the table. There was a tendency for the puck to get stuck in the corners and we had a ton of self goals but we think with practice we could eliminate some of these annoyances. The game play for us was definitely better slower, looking for deliberate angle shots versus a flurry attack back and forth.

All in all, we think that the Mainstreet Classics Table Top Air Powered Hockey Table is a fun product. There’s some obvious limitations but it doesn’t mean that it can’t provide hours of fun. For the price and if expectations are set correctly, this could be a big hit on your next trip. We love the portability of the unit and think that its size would be perfect for an RV. We’d recommend carrying a bunch of spare AA batteries and don’t forget a screwdriver.

Disclaimer: We did receive this product from Makais.com for review purposes.
